The Divine Revelation: A Glimpse into How the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Received Inspiration

The process of divine revelation (Wahi) to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) remains one of the most profound and awe-inspiring aspects of Islamic history. Through the eyes of his beloved wife, Aisha (RA), and the inquiries of his companions, we gain a rare insight into the physical and spiritual experience of receiving Allah’s message. Let’s delve deeper into this sacred phenomenon, exploring its forms, challenges, and the profound lessons it carries.

The Question That Unveiled a Mystery

The conversation begins with a curious inquiry from Al-Harith bin Hisham (RA), a respected companion known for his deep devotion. Addressing the Prophet (PBUH), he asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! How does divine inspiration descend upon you?”

This question reflects the companions’ reverence for understanding the unseen connection between the Prophet (PBUH) and the Divine. His response, preserved in the words of Aisha (RA), offers a vivid window into the two primary forms of revelation.

The Two Forms of Divine Revelation

1. The Intensity of the Bell’s Resonance

The Prophet (PBUH) described the first and most demanding form of revelation as resembling “the ringing of a bell.” This metaphor signifies an overwhelming, resonant force that enveloped him entirely. Key details include:
1. Physical and Spiritual Strain:  This mode of revelation was intensely taxing, both mentally and physically. The Prophet (PBUH) would experience immense pressure, as if absorbing a cosmic truth beyond human capacity.
2. Clarity Through Difficulty:  Despite its severity, this method ensured perfect retention. Once the “ringing” ceased, the message was imprinted on his heart and mind without error.

2. The Angel in Human Form

The second form involved the Angel Jibreel (AS) appearing as a man. This mode, while gentler, was no less miraculous:
1. Direct Communication: Jibreel (AS) would sometimes take a human guise—often that of a companion named Dihyah al-Kalbi (RA)—to deliver revelations in clear, spoken words.
2. Accessible Understanding:  The Prophet (PBUH) could engage with the angel, ask questions, and internalize the message calmly. This method is linked to pivotal moments, such as the teaching of prayer rituals during the Mi’raj (Night Journey).

Aisha’s (RA) Eyewitness Account: The Human Side of Revelation

Aisha (RA), renowned for her sharp intellect and closeness to the Prophet (PBUH), provided a poignant testimony to the tangible effects of revelation. She recalled:
“On an intensely cold day, I witnessed the Prophet (PBUH) receiving revelation. When it ended, sweat streamed from his forehead.”

This observation highlights two critical truths:

1. The Physical Toll: Even in freezing temperatures, the spiritual weight of Wahi caused visible exhaustion, underscoring the immense responsibility of prophethood.
2. Authenticity of the Message: The Prophet’s (PBUH) physical state during revelation dispels any notion of the process being metaphorical or effortless. It was a palpable, transformative experience.

Why This Matters: Lessons for Us

1. Divine Wisdom in Diversity:  The two modes of revelation reflect Allah’s wisdom in tailoring communication to the context—whether urgent commandments (like the Qur’an’s verses) or gradual guidance.
2. The Prophet’s Sacrifice: The hardships endured by the Prophet (PBUH) remind us of his unparalleled dedication to delivering Allah’s message, despite personal suffering.
3. Trust in Preservation: The meticulous process assures believers that every word of the Qur’an and Sunnah was preserved accurately, free from human error.

Conclusion: A Miracle Beyond Compare

The revelation to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) transcends mere historical accounts—it is a testament to Allah’s boundless power and the Prophet’s unwavering resilience. By understanding these sacred moments, we deepen our appreciation for the Qur’an’s divine origin and the extraordinary life of the Final Messenger (PBUH).

May this knowledge inspire us to reflect on the Qur’an’s verses with renewed awe and gratitude. 🌟

“So, when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it attentively and remain silent so that you may receive mercy.” (Qur’an 7:204)
